What kind of world do we want? And more questions and (no) answers to the symptoms of a collapsing world system.

Everything in our world is a system within other systems, mostly unstable and due to collapse. We can take three different attitudes to this: Ignorance – Acceptance – Action. We need to cultivate responsibility for our actions through art. Only then can resilience for the future problems emerge: Making contact with others, with oneself, with the world. The intertwining of audiences with and without a physical presence is a hybridisation of places, media and aims at autonomy, swarm intelligence, and contact.

ESSAY

KUNSTSCHNEE – A Hybrid Opera

What kind of world do we want? Questions and (no) answers to the symptoms of a collapsing world system.

First of all: What is a hybrid opera? With the word opera one can do what one wants, this is also due to the fact that the word „opera“ actually only means „work“. In „Kunstschnee“ it means the interlocking, also in terms of content, of audiences with a physical presence – at the performance venue – and those in front of desktops on the Internet all over the world. Both groups not only actively participate in the creation and progress of the piece, but also interact with each other. In addition, there is a third player, the computer as „artificial intelligence.“ This hybridization of places, media and audience groups appeals to autonomy and swarm intelligence at the same time.

In the discussion about the dramatically evolving situation of our world, there is an urge to a kind of duty to save the world. It is not clear what the actual objective of these propagated measures is, what they mean for the individual. Only very few individual people have significant levers to „change the world“. For the vast majority of people, the effect of their individual actions in the „masses“ is not comprehensible. Acting with individual responsibility seems almost like a psychological contradiction to general human action in groups.

Everything that surrounds us are systems. Damaged systems.

The social system has also been damaged for a long time. Appealing to individual „responsibility“ cannot solve the problems of this world. Institutional laws have also largely anesthetized collective instincts for responsibility. (Institutional responses to the CoV-19 pandemic have demonstrated incompetence. Sections of the population went into revolt). The social system of peace, freedom and responsibility is collapsing – it is „on the ropes“, lashed down by laws.

But everything in this world is a system. However, we generally know too little about systems. Social, societal, cultural, political or ecological, climatic, economic systems are unstable systems, which are also interlinked. Unstable systems collapse. That is their fate. A system collapse that has occurred cannot be stopped, cannot be corrected, cannot be reversed. It is a partial process in an even further superordinate system. One collapse often triggers others.

Responses to system failures by those responsible often express surprise: „That shouldn’t have happened, or couldn’t have happened…“

Individual attitudes toward the instability of our systems vary. Roughly, three different attitudes can be identified.

The fatalistic position. It ignores the symptoms. Things just take their course. Or everything is a lie, propaganda…

The second position states the facts without adopting a specific emotional attitude. One remains wait-and-see. „Others will act.“

The third position is that of emotio- nalized action. „Agitatevi, Organizatevi, Studiate,“ Antonio Gramsci once said, „Move, organize, study!“

So the question, „What kind of world do we want?“ is a question about our own position. And this is immediately followed by another question: How will I cope with my position? Do I have „resilience“ for the problems ahead? How do I shape the future, or my future, our future? How do I act now?

System developments can be compared with the classical drama theory: Development – climax – decline. We have known this dramaturgy for thousands of years. But have we taken it seriously? Or did the drama in the course of the centuries become more and more from an existential ritual to a paraphrase with empty, external schematisms and phrases?

Collapsology – The possibility of individual responsibility through art

The four-year project of „Collapsology“ is about using words, gestures and sounds to create connections among people about a theme: One’s own actions for the future. It is about creating connections from people to themselves. This in turn, however, leads to the view of one’s own death. At the same time, an aesthetic-artistic activity is to playfully test a responsibility that has been taken away from people in the „administered world“.

Neither state institutions nor private companies can offer happiness or meaning in life. The individual is given less and less room for maneuver, less and less responsibility is transferred, mistrust is the basis of this society. More and more, man is forced into an imposed „happiness“ through things and consumption. Individual responsibility and indivi-dual meaning of life, however, continue to show up in art as a possibility: the possibility of individual responsibility through art – as the center of our human existence. It is a contribution to resilience through art.

The first part of the KOLLAPSOLOGIE series, entitled Kunstschnee (Art Snow), consists of „acts“ as actions that take place in physical presence as well as on the Internet, which results in the hybrid character of this music theater.

The online version uses the possibility of video film and digital interaction. Theoretically, a physically present person could simultaneously watch the online version via a digital device and only then get a complete impression of the entire work.

KUNSTSCHNEE – SYNOPSIS

„In the future, nature will have nothing at all to do in winter.“ Thus was reported in 1927, nearly a hundred years ago, the opening of a huge artificial snow runway in Vienna’s Northwest Station. That chemical imitations (or interventions, etc.) of or in natural phenomena such as snow offer advantages of convenience – „you don’t get wet“ – has allowed humanity to develop its technologies in a completely wrong direction. Even today, when the term „artificial snow“ has been officially replaced by „technical snow“: the intervention in the ecological system by providing artificially produced ski slopes is merely argued from a purely profit-oriented point of view. The miracle of the snow and the snowflake, the miracle of the transformations of a molecule into different aggregate states, that point at which our positivistic knowledge of the world comes to an end – and humility must begin before the great system into which we are born.

The plot outline for a drama entitled „The Death of Empedocles“ by the romantic German poet Friedrich Hölderlin (1770-1843) set to music in a Persian translation by Farhad Ahmadkhan. In it, the culturally skeptical Greek philosopher Empedocles (495-435 B.C.) unites with nature by throwing himself into the volcano Etna. Empedocles is known for his early theory that the world is made up of four elements. He thus becomes a trend-setter for the entire concept of „collapsology,“ which will be devoted to a different element each year.

22 poems about snow, which I wrote in the spring of 2022, were translated into Japanese by Manami Okazaki and are the content of a series of recitations in which the audience present can also participate choreographically.

The audience’s participation then turns into a collective performance as a „discursive reading“ of texts on collapsology.

We have no future without a past. Without knowing our past, we have no present. Everything repeats itself – but on a different part of our path.

KUNSTSCHNEE –

Alles, was uns umgibt, sind Systeme.

Man bleibt abwartend.
