THE SILENCE OF THE BUTTERFLY

for six concert grand pianos (2026), first performance

Pianists: Roberto Arosio, Monaldo Braconi, Monica Cattarossi, Alessandra Gentile, Luigi Pecchia e Pierluigi Di Tella

The piece not only incorporates the introductions from the five ‘candidates’ for the role of Butterfly, as dictated by the plot of the opera The Butterfly Equation (2024, world premiere in Siena, performance in Vienna) in the first part, but now adds a sixth character. This character is – in keeping with the opera – the protagonist from the opera itself, the television presenter, who ultimately considers himself to be the only possible and best Butterfly. The music for this is based on a section that was not performed in the opera, and sketches from the opera have been used for this ‘suite’.

(German text below)

At the suggestion of Nicola Sani, the artistic director of the Academia Chigiana Festival, this piece for six grand concert pianos was composed with the aim of exploring the theme of the soloist’s absence. An alternative title for the piece could also have been: The Absence of the Butterfly.

At the world premiere – quite unplanned – a motorbike starting up outside the hall immediately before the performance complemented the overall sound in a manner reminiscent of John Cage’s concepts: the piece began with this engine noise, which, in a peculiar way, further emphasised the question of silence and absence. Silence and absence (of unwanted sound and noise) are among the most underestimated phenomena and conditions essential to our human well-being. – At the same time, it is a message to everyone to reflect on the madness into which the world of machines has manoeuvred itself. The thorn in the ear – certain
